Michael McCafferty - USA Biplane Tour

Day Six
Flying Low

Finally got my modem cord. Picked it up at the local Fedex office and headed out to the airport. Now it's off to the northeast under clear skies. We left about 11:30 so we were in for some rough mid-day air and we really hammered out the miles to N. Platte NE, which was a huge airport for such a small town. In spite of the great tailwind we had all the way, there was only a mild crosswind, so the landing was very good.

A great lunch at the airport restaurant, about 2 hours rest, and we were back in the skies for a late after noon flight to my first visit to S.Dakota. The winds calmed down in the late afternoon, the air became much less turbulent and the flight was really excellent. A short distance out of N. Platte we encountered a light rainshower and I noticed that there was a rainbow right ahead of me. In fact, I passed right through one end of it. Amazing! I have always chased rainbows and wanted to stand in one end of one, but never did I think that I would ever do it. And today it happened that I actually passed through one. It was incredible, a real once in a lifetime event.

We were both flying low over the landscape of farms and pastures. Really low. This is the best flying imaginable for me. You really get the full sensation of flying. Nothing compares!

Yankton is a town like virtually every other small town in America. Friendly people with uncomplicated lives who live in simple, yet clean homes with well kept yards, have a couple of young children, and a job. Several people came out to visit us. They saw our biplanes approaching low over town and couldn't resist the opportunity to check out these machines from another era.
