Michael McCafferty - USA Biplane Tour

Day Five
Going Solo

Left Spanish Peaks early but only got 20 miles before we ran into heavy haze and fog. Weather Brief called for thunderstorms and rainshowers and low ceilings, but as we found out later in the day, the weatherman was wrong. We could have gone on to Bartlesville Oklahoma, but we made the right decision for the moment.

After returning to Spanish Peaks (actually the name of the town is Walsenburg, Colorado), we plotted a new course north to Colorado Springs to drop off Brian the filmmaker so he could get a commercial flight into Bartlesville.

This was the break I was waiting for. Now I could put the heavy bags up front, and better balance the load. Overall the plane would be at least 160 pounds lighter and would handle a lot better.

Even better, I could now remove the front windshield and cover over the front cockpit. This gives me much better visibility to the front, a big improvement for flying, takeoffs and landings.

From Colorado Springs, we flew north to Longmont, along the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains. Longmont is were Art is finishing a new home, and planning to be here when he sells his home in LA.

We stayed at the Boulderado Hotel in Boulder and dined at the very fist class restaurant named "Q's". I highly recommend both.

Tomorrow morning we will open the charts and determine a course to some as yet unknown destination, and some as yet unknowable adventure.
